Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private James A. Henderson, Co. "E," 5th Alabama Infantry, "Saunders (?) Cross Roads, VA," September 11, 1861, 3pp. 4to with hand-carried cover, to his mother, Belmont, Alabama, reading, in part: "…last week a man of our company by the name of Dure died with the typhoid fever…Rafe (?) Smith, poor fellow, he was thrown from his horse and broke both of his thies and one arm, I never understood how long he lived afterwards, but I was toled the places mortified…" Soiling and some fading, good condition.
