Rare CDV, identified on the front mount, “Sergt. Boston Corbett, 16th N.Y. Cav., Who shot J. Wilkes Booth, April 26, 1865.” Corbett is seated in uniform. Sharp focus, good contrast. This Brady photograph, id’d on the front mount and backstamped, has a small minor spot in the background, gold-ruled. Thomas P. "Boston" Corbett (1832-?) was an extremely religious man who wore his hair quite long because, as one acquaintance said, Jesus himself wore long hair. Long hair not enough, he castrated himself in order to avoid sinful temptation by women. After the war he returned to his trade as a hatter in Boston and later in Danbury, Conn. He removed to Kansas in 1878 working as a lay-preacher. He was later sent to an insane asylum after attempting to break up a meeting in the Kansas legislature with a revolver. After escaping the asylum in 1888 he told an old friend that he was going to Mexico and was never heard from again.
