A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 3pp. 4to., signed "Wm. L. Jackson", written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, "Harrison Landing, July 30, 1862", in part: "…I received a letter from Sherry and mailed at Old Point [Comfort]. He was in the same room with Horace [ide, 1st Vermont Cavalry] & Durham. He is well and in good spirits. The enemy took every thing away from him. When Sherry left he gave him a shirt, towel, blanket, spoon and 1 lbs coffee…Sherry sold an old overcoat that he picked up for 10.00 in gold [while a POW]. Horace will be released soon…they fare hard there, only two meals a day…Col. Hyde returned to the Regt this a. m. he does not look quite well yet…the band has not been mustered out yet. They are very anxious to go home…I had a letter from Sherry this morning. He is [in] Gen. Hosp. at Phila. He wants me to send his things home. I hardly expect him back…". VG
