HATCH, John Porter. (1822 - 1901) Union brigadier general who was at Winchester, 2nd Bull Run and Chantilly. Later he became a department commander in the South. Autograph Letter Signed, by Lt. J.P. Hatch, as “your son” 2p. quarto, Jalapa, Mexico, April 28, 1847, with integral leaf addressed to his father M.P. Hatch in Oswego, New York, and initialed at bottom “J.P.H”, the letter reads in part: “...I am in quarters one mile from the garrison and have to walk over four and sometimes five times a day making eight or ten miles...I have today bought a fine horse...I am acting Adjutant...Major Linner is still suffering from his wound and has not been able to assume command of the regiment, but will be in command before we move, he feels grateful t ome for going to his assistance when he was shot down and when he though all the men had deserted him to tell the truth it was rather a ticklish thing for I did not see how it was possible I could do it without being hit, but I felt that it was my duty and I must not hang back and fortunately was not touched - I can compare the shower of bullets to nothing but hail they raised a complete cloud of dust about us when they struck the ground...my sabre scabbard was struck by grape shot but it did it no injury just glancing - Genl. Worth has taken Perote with fifty pieces of cannon and tonight there is a rumor that he has captured Santa Anna...” VG to Fine.
