Confederate officer's war-date letter by Major H. E. Barnes, Acting Assistant, Ordnance Department, 2pp., 4to, Vicksburg, Mississippi, January 11, 1862, to "Lt. Col. Edward Fontaine, Chief of Ord Depart, M.A. (Mississippi Army)," reading, in part: "…I delivered (as pr your order,) to Capt Taylor, one keg 'Hazards Rifle Powder"…and enclose you his receipt therefore - I called upon Mr. Paxton for BrL's of the shot he had been ordered to ship to Columbus Ky, and found, to my surprise and vexation, that he had forwarded only 400 of the 42s…I enclose lists of articles sent hence to Columbus and to Memphis. The powder will be forwarded to you as you directed as soon as I can procure casks &c and have it properly packed. Concerning the cartridge paper and lead, which you wished inquiry made for, I find a lot of paper some of which may answer the purpose…of lead I have discovered a lot of about 2000 lbs…" Very good condition.
