A rare field printed Appomattox parole, 1p. oblong 12mo., "APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE, VA., April 10th, 1865" issued to, "The Bearer Jno. E. Barineau, of Co. B, 8th Fla. Regt. of Finnigan's Brigade, a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, [who] has permission to go to his home, and there reman undisturbed." Signed and made official by brigade commander, Col. David Lang (1838-1917) colonel of the 8th Florida who was WIA at Antietam and Fredericksburg (where he was severely wounded in the head) and Perry's brigade at Gettysburg when he helped attack the Union lines along Cemetery Ridge on July 2, 1863. An ancestral note indicates that John Barineau was the only one of four brother who fought in the war to survive. Appomattox paroles are seldom seen in the marketplace with those for Floridian's being among the rarest encountered since less that 500 men were surrendered there from the Sunshine state. A bit light as is typical since they were meant to be used and carried for identification. Negligible tape stains at the corners, else VG
