STEVENS, Isaac Ingalls (1818-1862) Major in the U.S. Army during the Mexican War; Governor of Washington Territory, 1853-57; Delegate to U.S. Congress from Washington Territory, 1857-61; general in the Union Army during the Civil War. Shot and killed at the battle of Chantilly, Fairfax County, Va., September 1, 1862. Stevens County, Wash. is named for him.Autograph Letter Signed, “Isaac I. Stevens” 1p. quarto, Washington, March 24, 1853, addressed to John Douglas in New York, it reads in part: ‘...Having been appointed Governor of Washington Territory, I propose in going out to make an exploration from the sources of the Mississippi River, across the Rocky Mountains to Puget’s Sound to determine the practicability of a Rail Road on Emigrant route...I have been informed...that you can give me much information relative to this route. The character of the Indian tribes, the number and localities of the several trading posts & c....Mr. Bull says you have resided nearly fifteen months, in the country of the Blackfeet Indians, about whom I wish particularly to get accurate information. I want especially to get the names of the Hunters & Half Breeds, who have a knowledge of the country...” VG.
