DIX, John A. (1798-1879). Union general who, as Treasury Secretary under Buchanan before the Civil War broke out, issued the famous order to shoot anyone attempting to take down the American flag. Autograph Letter Signed, “John A. Dix” 3p. octavo, August 26, 1854, addressed to Hon. D.S. Dickinson, and reads in part: “...I received your note in respect to your church...I know there is a prejudice against Trinity Church; but I can assume you, have...a perfect knowledge of the affairs....” More on raising money for the Church.
