Lot of three unsigned letters by Sam R. Ladd, 10 pages, quarto, 1856, Reading, Pennsylvania to an unknown cousin. Written in the heat of political and patriotic passion, Ladd writes in small part:"...You profess much love for liberty and great hatred for slavery with very little love for our Glorious Union and that portion of her laws which recognize the object of your hatred. I too love liberty & union...to her laws I owe allegiance above any sectional claim come it from the North, South, East or West. My sympathies are bound with the people of the North & their interests but my eyes are not closed against the wrights of the South. They are part of Ourselves. Their institutions are similar to Ours. Except one - slavery. Now I hate slavery but I should hate civil war and bloodshed as much...". Small splits, else Fine condition.
