A group of twelve 1876 Harper’s Weekly issues, each 16pp., many with supplements, all disbound and in very good condition. These issues are replete with Thomas Nast political cartoons and illustrations. Nast was at his peak during this period. As a political cartoonist, Thomas Nast wielded more influence than any other artist of the 19th century. For simplicity, we will list the date and cover engraving. The group in cludes; January 8th, “Calling on Miss Columbia” shows European leaders at the White House; January 15th, “Madness, Yet there’s a method in it,” Nast supports public schools; January 22nd; “Leading the Blind.”; February 5th, “Amesty, or the end of the peaceful tiger.” nast slams Tammany; February 19th, “More.” Nast puns the New York senate’s request for more of everything; March 4th, “We can not tell a lie. We did not do it.” nast comments on mob rule; April 1st, “The minute man-fixed by the spirit of ‘76.” Nast shows Uncle Sam armed and ready; April 22, “Cur-Tail-Phobia.” Nast shows Uncle Sam weeping over the Civil Service Corruption; May 6th, “The Corruptiojn Period ...” Shows corruption boulders stack at Grant’s White House door; May 13th, “Dangerous Ground,” shows the ‘76 Patriots readying for battle; June 10th, “Columbia, beware of harboring a viper in your bosom.’ Nast lampoons sham reforms; July 8th, “Why we laugh.” Nast draws himself saluting the Republican slate of Hayes / Wheeler.
