Autograph Letter Signed, “Thaddeus Stevesn” 1p. quarto, Lancaster, November 3, 1857, with franked cover addressed to Edward McPherson in Gettysburg, with letter of response by McPherson. The Edward McPherson Farm in the northwest portion of Gettysburg was the scene of the 1st day's fighting in that epic battle. The letter from Stevens reads in part: “...Since you left Harrisburg I have not learned how you inted to dispose of yourself. Do you intend to play editor any longer? We are starting a big paper here with anti-slavery proclamations. How would it suit you to take charge of the leading editorials. Bring an assistant for the scissors...” McPhersons 1p. quarto, response is not signed but reads “I am glad to hear that a paper is to be started in Lancaste which will have a nobler aim than that of the Examiner and apparently the Union...Neither of these papers is doing its duty in the present crisies....You know my views of political questions...Upon the slavery question, I stand where Gov. Johnson has planted himself - I think the position he has taken is correct and more fitted to strenghten Gen. Scott & the Whig party generally than nay other...” Both Fine. Ex. Edward Stern collection. Edward McPherson a representative from Pennsylvania was born in Gettysburg and in 1851 was Editor of the Harrisburg American. He did become editor of the Indpenedent Whig in Lancaster from 1851 to 1854, then the Daily Times in Pittsburg. He was elected to the House of Representatives 1859-1863 and was clerk of the House 1863-1875.
