Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, on “Excelsior” lettersheet, July 10, 1861, Camp Clarke, and reads in part: “...I am enjoying tip top health while there are a good sick with the diarhea. Father has been rather unwell with it two or three days....Yesterday, they gave us some nice woolen stockings and told us not to put them on until we had orders for they were to be worn when we started on our march. They also gave us a muscito [sic] net to put over our heads...A sad accident happened in the Light Battery...but I will not give you the particulars...Yesterday afternoon both regiments were formed in line in the grove and the funeral procession marched through between both Regt. firts came twelve fo the Marines with their sabres reversed and then one of the gun carriages drawn by six black horses the bearers each side of it. On the carriage were the coffins and they were covered by the American flag, then came the Marines. They did not ride but marched. The procession halted about the center of the line and a chapter was read...and then a prayer, was offered by Jameson, the Marines then escorted the bodies to the depot. All the flags in both camps were lowered at half mast...” VG.
