Confederate staff officer's war-date letter (period manuscript copy) by McHenry Howard, 2pp., 8vo, Montgomery White Sulphur Springs, Virginia, to Major General Isaac R. Trimble, n.p., reading, in part: "…I accept your offer of the position of A.D.C. on your staff with many thanks and much pleasure…I was quite sick in Richmond during the months of January and February and the Doctor finally ordered me to this place to drink the Sulphur water…I am slowly but steadily getting well…I am very desirous of joining you as soon as possible not knowing how much longer I shall stay here…" McHenry Howard, a Princeton-educated attorney, was born in Baltimore to Francis Scott Key's daughter, Elizabeth. Howard lived well into the 20th century, in 1914 publishing Recollections of a Maryland Confederate Soldier and Staff Officer Under Johnston, Jackson and Lee. Fine condition.
