SUMNER, CHARLES (1811-1874) U.S. senator; He became an outspoken abolitionist and was physically assaulted by Representative Preston Brooks (S.C.) while sitting at his Senate desk (1856) and was left slightly crippled for life. Autograph Letter Signed, “Charles Sumner” October 3, 1861, Boston, and reads “I am satisfied that Sergt. Hancock is a most meritorious person. He is now a soldier of loyal standing. Can you not give him a commission i nthe army?...” Tear with paperloss, mounted, else about VG.
