WEBER, Max (1824-1901) Brigadier General. On May 9, 1861, he was commissioned colonel of the 20th N. Y. infantry, known as the "Turner Rifles," composed of volunteers from the Turner societies of New York city, and mustered into the U. S. service for a two years, term. For more than a month the regiment was quartered at the Turtle Bay brewery, and on June 13 it embarked for Fortress Monroe, where it encamped at Tyler's point for a month and then moved to Hampton. On Aug. 20 it embarked for Fort Hatteras and participated in the capture of the fortifications, being quartered there until Sept. 25, when it returned to Virginia. The ensuing winter was spent at Camp Hamilton, and on April 28, 1862, Col. Weber was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers, in which position he served until May 13, 1865, when he resigned from the service and returned to the pursuits of civil life. Manuscript Letter Signed, "Max Weber", 1p. 4to., Camp Hamilton, Virginia, September 16, 1861, to Major General Wool Commanding Department of Virginia. In full: "Sir, A very strong diarrhea which attacked my this morning and since became worse is making it impossible for me to take command of the troops at Camp Hamilton...I therefore conferred the command to Colonel Wyman . Still thinking myself able to perform the duty as Field Officer of the day I did not report myself to be sick..." Fine.
