CHAMBERLAIN, Joshua Lawrence (1828-1914). Union general who as Colonel of the 20th Maine held Little Round Top at Gettysburg on the second day of the battle against repeated assaults. Had his position been taken, the Confederates could have rolled up the entire Union line, so his heroism made the great Union victory there possible. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for this, and promoted to general. Autograph Letter Signed, “J.L. Chamberlain” 1p. octavo, Brunswick, July 12, 1861, in full “I have carefully examined ‘The English Cyclopaedia’ and consider it the best work of the kind within my knowledge...” Fine. Framed.
