Union Letter From 71st Regiment, Engineer Corps. A 3-page letter written by W.H. Lockwood, on stationery of the "Thirty Sixth Congress, House of Representatives / United States of America" with a vignette of the Capitol and a second allegorical vignette with the U.S. seal, an eagle, flag, etc., May 20, 1861, Washington City, 9.75" x 7.75", Very Fine. Excellent content, in part: "The 71st Regiment are quartered at the Navy Yard.....We have sworn into the U.S. Service for three months, unless sooner discharged. The Zouaves are encamped on the opposite side of the Potomac River. There is a bridge outside the yard that runs over into Maryland. We have a guard on the bridge both day and night....I regret to announce the death of our Colonel [Vosburgh] who died this morning after an illness of three days....When we reflect that the war is being waged by the rebellious states of the South against the Federal Government has no direct reference to the Slavery question, but the determination on the part of the officers of the National Government to carry out and execute the laws of the whole Union, I say it is about time that the North should show its loyalty by rising enmasse and crush out the Rebellion and the Traitors at the same time...we cannot be too severe with them...." Light toning and a couple of separation folds. Excellent content.
