September 18, 1861, A "Ship Chandler" Pleads for More Time to Pay a Bill, Wilmington, DE, Choice Near Mint. Autograph Letter Signed, "Francis Barry," on blue, fine-laid paper, 9.75" x 7.75," with embossed company seal in upper left corner: "BARRY / SHIP CHANDLER." Barry writes to his attorney, Francis N. Gore, asking for 60 more days to pay a debt, because the government has been slow in paying him for services. In part: "I regret that I am so situated that I cannot pay you now, as I always mean to be promt [sic], but these times, and the slow acting of the government is my excuse..." Interesting content, reflecting the difficulty of conducting business during the Civil War period.
