January 1861, "MEMORIAL TO CONGRESS," New York Chamber of Commerce, Very Fine. Printed Document, 9.75" x 7.75," 4 pages integral, signed in print by WILLIAM A. BOOTH, SIMEON BALDWIN, as chair and secretary of the memorial committee, as well as the names of some 30 other dignitaries and officials from New York. This committee drafted resolutions calling for the Congress to develop a compromise and settle with the rebel states, so that the "border states" could alleviate the difficulties of marauders and violence visited upon them during the Civil War conflict. Chief among the "compromise" language was the complete capitulation to the slaveholding states, so that they might "constitutionally" continue holding African Americans in bondage. Lightly toned pages, minor soiling, expertly repaired edge splits along the center fold, and some penciled notations on the inside pages. An intriguing document, signed in print by a "who's who" of New York leaders.
