The Liberator (1831-1865) was an abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp in 1831. Garrison co-published weekly issues of The Liberator from Boston continuously for 35 years, from January 1, 1831, to the final issue of December 29, 1865. Although its circulation was only about 3,000, and three-quarters of subscribers were African Americans in 1834, the publication was very influential. All isues are 4pp., never bound, occassional spots and edge wear. The newspaper group includes; March 15, 1834, front page “Memorials of a Slave”, tells of a slave who bought his freedom. ...plus, March 29, 1834, front page “The Native African Intellect” prints a letter written a former slave whose master freed him and sent him back to Africa. ... plus, April 5, 1834, from the front page, “Boy Stealing” reports that Boston Sheriff went into a school and captured a seven year black boy, accused of fleeing slavery, and placed him in the jail. ... plus, May31, 1834, from the front page, the Constitution of the Anti Slavery Society. ... plus, August 9, 1834, front page, The Scheme of the Maryland Colonization Society, a Scheme of Cruelity and Oppression.”
