DIX, John A.(1798-1879) Union Major General, commanded 7th Corps. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury on January 15, 1861 as a late Buchanan appointee, and is famous for his American Flag Dispatch and the declaration "If anyone attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot." Autograph Endorsement Signed “John A. Dix” on verso of two letters, 2p. quarto, March 1, 1862, pertaining to the application of J.H. Graham of New York for a 2nd Lieutenant position in the army. Fine.
