Autograph Letter Signed “W.W. Shane” 3pp. quarto, March 4, 1850, and reads in part: ‘...here I am a Southerner born and bred going to move to a free state such is the fact. I expect to settle either in Iowa or Illinois...I had intended in settling in Tennessee but after consideration I thought it best for me to go where it did not take so much to buy a farm & then there was the heavy out lay for negroes. I believe if any southerner can get along in a free state I can, for I am not afraid or ashamed to work...I shall take two of our old negroes with us, our old nurse & her husband. I do not wish to sell them and they do not want to leave us so I shall take them along . Of course when there they will be free but I have no fear of their leaving us for they know that they would not be able to work enough to make their own living...” More. Very good condition.
