Rare property map of a slave plantation purchased by Josiah Chambers, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, c. 1855, 1pp. 6”x6-1/2”. Very good condition. In 1855, Chambers purchased "Hard Times" plantation at auction from the widow of a neighbor with whom he was apparently a partner with before his death. This hand-drawn map shows two section of property amounting to a little over 2000 acres adjacent to the Red River and Mississippi River. The acreage is listed by section. Chambers also owned Oakland Plantation near present day Alexandria, LA. The bill of sale for Hard Times Plantation lists lands along the Bayou Robert [near the Red River] and total acreage of just over 2000 acres. The bill of sale also showed that there were over a 100 slaves on that plantation which was sold in 1855.
