Printed Document, being an invitation to a slave plantation ball/dinner, held by Mr. & Mrs. Josiah Chambers March 6th [1861] at Hard Times Plantation in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Card measures 3”x4-1/2”. Fine condition. Josiah Chambers by this time owned 10,000 acres of land in Rapides Parish and 336 slaves. He had bought Hard Times Plantation in 1855 and also had inherited Oakland Plantation from his father. At the end of the war to avoid bankruptcy, he had to sell half of his holdings of 10,000 acres.
