Pre Civil War, Imprint Speech titled: "MODERN DEMOCRACY - THE ALLY OF SLAVERY," by Hon. M.W. Tappan, The New York Tribune, 15pp. octavo, Delivered on July 29, 1856 in The House of Representatives. "For the first time in the history of this Government, the issue is fairly made up between the power of Slavery on the one hand and the power of the principles of Liberty on the other. One or the other must yield." Towards the end of his speech Mr. Tappan states, "We desire to cultivate the relations of peace and of fraternal kindness with the people of the South." On the back of the last page there is also an advertisement for The New-York Tribune, Signed in print by Horace Greeley and another editor. Fine condition.
