Rare war-date albumen photograph entitled “John E. Seabrook’s Plantation. - Bird’s Eye View. Edisto Island, S.C.” 8”x6”, mounted to 12”x10” printed card, published by H.P. Moore, Concord, New Hampshire. With period ink manuscript “# Martin S. James, Post Adjt. leaning against sun dial, a little negro boy that he picked up and stood on sun dial.” Image shows nine slaves and nine soldiers. The “little negro boy” standing on the sun dial, is saluting the photographer. Excellent image of this occupied Confederate plantation taken from the master’s mansion. Fine condition.The James Seabrook Cotton Plantation had 107 slaves in the 1860 census. Martin Stoddard James was Post Adjutant on detached service from his unit, the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, during the late winter of 1862.
