Booklet, UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE, AND COMPLETE EQUALITY IN CITIZENSHIP, THE SAFEGUARDS OF DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS: SHOWN IN DISCOURSES BY HENRY WARD BEECHER, ANDREW JOHNSON, AND WENDELL PHILLIPS. Boston: 1865 14pp. Double columns, minor water spotting. About Very Good. This pamphlet was financed by George Stearns, the Boston Brahmin and one of the Secret Six who had underwritten John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. It includes Beecher's Speech delivered on February 12, 1865, advocating universal suffrage; a summary of Andrew Johnson's 1864 Nashville speech upon his nomination for the vice-presidency, based upon which Stearns wrongly predicts Johnson's receptiveness to Negro Suffrage; and Phillips's hopeful speech asserting that Johnson's hostility to the planter class makes him a natural ally in the struggle. FIRST EDITION. Stearns was one of the "Secret Six" who aided John Brown in Kansas, and financially supported him until Brown's execution after the ill-fated raid on Harpers Ferry. Stearns physically owned the pikes and 200 Sharps rifles brought to Harpers Ferry by Brown and his followers. Following Brown's arrest, Stearns briefly fled to Canada, but returned to Medford to face inquiry following Brown's death.
