Scarce silver corp badge engraved “Ira Fields Va. Colored Guards” on perimeter, with “Co ‘A’” at center. Stick pin back. With copies of his National Archives military records. Fine condition. Ira Fields, a liberated slave, enlisted on September 27, 1864 at Alexandria, Virginia. He was eventually assigned to Co. A, of the Virginia Colored Guards. According to census and death records, Fields was born in Virginia around 1838. After the war, he and his wife Francis lived in the District of Columbia where he worked as a laborer and janitor. Ira Fields died in July 1918 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 23.
