A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Edwin J. Horton, Co. H, 40th Mass. Vols., "Jones Landing, Va., Office C. S. 2d Div., 25th A. C., March 22, 1865, in part: "…"…Lieut. [Charles H.] Briggs [40th Mass. Vols.] gave me a pair of stockings. He told me to thank you for them and that…some society or circle knit them. Please accept a soldier's thanks for your little gift. I am glad…that the soldier is not forgotten…we who are in the army love to know that those at home do not forget us…of the sixty-four who left Attleboro in Sixty two, but few will return when what is left of the Fortieth Mass. returns…we have one more hard campaign to go through…some of the good people [of Attleboro] used to say that all the bad ones had gone to the army, but…that was not so…I…have been on detached service…I am in the Commissary Dept. feeding darkies. Why don't you come out and teach them something? About all they know is to eat, sleep and steal. Do you suppose they will ever make men?…it will take about ten generations to make anything of them. Its a grand field of labour for those who like it. Hard work to…direct in care of Capt. J. D. Lewis, C. S. 2nd Div. 25th Army Corps…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
