A rare circa1866 Union Army Bounty Broadside, 4to., issued by pension brokers M. J. Higgins & Co., Army and Navy Bankers with offices in New York City, Brooklyn and Newark, New Jersey. This broadside boldly declares, in small part: "…Pay As Follows: Bounties. To all men enlisted from July 1st, 1861 to June 25, 1863 $100.00…Under the Equalization Act. 3 Years' men get--$100. 2 Years' men get--$50…COLORED TROOPS are entitled to the same as white troops…Pensions. Under the law…all persons totally and permanently disabled are entitled to $25, $20 and $15 respectively…in cases of Colored Soldiers' widows, evidence of cohabitation and mutual recognition is sufficient…". Expected wear from being posted with irregular margins, else one period glue stain otherwise VG. A great piece in which the Federal army recognized the service of Black veterans in the Civil War and the first we have encountered in the marketplace.
