Camp Diary, 12 pages, octavo, August 9 - August 13, 1862, probably Camp Dennison, Ohio. Three copies of a 4-page illustrated letterhead published by James Gates of Cincinnati have been used by a new recruit for a journal. The woodcut, tinted with red ink, is titled THE SOUTHERNER AS HE WAS and shows a dissolute rascal in a white suit taking his ease with smoke and drink. The writer goes into great detail about camp life and also references news of a battle in Virginia that can only be Cedar Mountain. The "diary" reads in small part: "...There are a good number in our camp seriously inclined, but as is general in camps, there is great laxity in morals. By night more than one, I am told, was drunk...Some four or five packs of cards have already done service in the Cause of Satan...I was ordered by Capt. Wilson to detail a squad of twelve men to clean out the new quarters. This was my first military duty under orders...The battle in Virginia stated to have occurred between Pope and Jackson on last Saturday was between Baks and Jackson - the former having one of five divisions under Pope, aiming to cocentrate at Gordonsville. Jackson has again been too sharp for our generals...". A few stains stains and a small split along the top fold. Good condition.
