Authentic issue of the Pictorial War Record, June 16, 1883, 8pp., 11-3/4” x 16-1/2,” never bound. The New York riots are covered in this issue with eleven engravings, three of which illustrate the racist tone to this draft riot. from the front page, a 1/2 page engraving, “Rioters Pillaging the Colored Orphan Asylum ....” Then from the interior, a horrible 1/2 page engraving, “Brutal Murder of a negro Boy in Eighth Avenue” (lynched). Then another horrible incident is engraved, “The Rioters Hanging A Negro In Clarkson Street, and Afterwards Burning His Body.”... plus, authentic issue of the Pictorial War Record, June 23, 1883, 8pp., 11-3/4” x 16-1/2,” never bound. the new York riot coverage continues with another nine engravings, two of which show the attack on blacks. From the interior, a 1/3 page engraving, “Cruelty Inflicted on a Negro Boy Near the Orphan Asylum.” Then, another 1/3 page engraving “Rioters Chasing Negro Women and Children Through Vacant Lots ...”Initially intended to express anger at the draft, the New York draft riots turned into a Race riot, with white rioters, mainly but not exclusively Irish immigrants, attacking blacks wherever they could find them. Estimates indicate at least 119 blacks were killed.
