An authentic issue of the The Liberator, Boston, September 28, 1838, 4pp, disbound, slightly tanned, lightly foxed, VG. From the front page, “Narrative of James Williams” defends the authenticity of the book published by the American Anti-Slavery Society. According to the narrative, James Williams was born a slave on May 16, 1805, in Powhatan County, Virginia. His master was George Larrimore, who was also widely known to be his grandfather. Raised as a well-treated house slave. His good fortune changes and he make a run. Following the North Star, Williams reaches Georgia, where, although spotted by an armed white man, he escapes, because the man was out of ammunition. .... This narrative was repeatidly attacked by the Southern press as a fraud. This article defends it.
