An authentic issue of the The Liberator, Boston, August 14, 1857, 4pp, disbound, slightly tanned, lightly foxed, VG. From the front page a 2/3 column report “Horrible Barbarity” describes the killing of Negro by Erskine Mansfield. The event in part, “Three negroes had escaped from Missouri, and a reward of $300 each, or $900 for all, was offered for their recovery. They were pursued without legal process. ... testimony given states that ... Mansfield fired in self-defence killing one of the negroes. ... The next morning .. carried the corpse out for burial... assisted the kidnapper in exhuming the body, when the head was drawn across the corner of the coffin, and with an axe, was dissevered from the corrupting remains, and being placed in a vessel of spirits, was taken to Missouri. ...The editor of the Chicago Tribune say, ‘Here is a fugitive from a life-long and compulsory service. His heart throbbing with an irrepressible desire for liberty, a love of which is planted within him, he flies to Illinois, pursued by human bloodhounds, that are on his track. They get scent of their prey, and put other hounds on scent also. They overtake the trembling man on the highway, accompanied by two of his fellows, and, without warrant or process of law, attempt an arrest; the panting fugitive makes another effort to elude his pursuers, and is shot dead in his tracks. ...”
