COOPER, Samuel (1798-1876) was a career United States Army officer, serving during the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. Although little-known today, Cooper was also the highest ranking Confederate general during the American Civil War. After the conflict, he remained in Virginia as a farmer. Manuscript Signed “S. Cooper” 1pp. octavo, War Department, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, August 29, 1854, being Speical Orders No. 148, and reads “Second Lieutenant William E. Jones Regiment of mounted Riflemen will report for temporary duty to the Quartersmaster General of the Army...” Some dampstaining, else very good condition. William Edmondson Jones, known as Grumble Jones, (May 3, 1824 – June 5, 1864) was a planter, a career United States Army officer, and a Confederate cavalry General, killed in the Battle of Piedmont in the American Civil War.
