LEE, Robert Edward (1807-1870) was an American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865. The son of Revolutionary War officer Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee III and a top graduate of the United States Military Academy, Robert E. Lee was an exceptional officer and combat engineer in the United States Army for 32 years. During this time, he served throughout the United States, distinguished himself during the Mexican–American War, served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, and married Mary Custis.Rare Document Signed “RE Lee” as Brevet Colonel Corps of Engineers, 1pp. quarto, on vellum, April 11, 1854, being a partly-printed form issued by the “Army of the United States of America” stating that Adam Straley, a private at the US Military Academy, served his full term of enlistment. Additionally signed at bottom by GEORGE H. THOMAS (1816-1870) who was a United States Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War, one of the principal commanders in the Western Theater. Framed. Fine condition.
