A great Southern anti-Lincoln election letter, 2pp. 4to., written by a certain "J. N. Cookes", Memphis, Tenn. Dec. 10, 1860, in part: "…we are still laying at Memphis. We have been retailing apples & potatoes since we have been here…today…he made a wholesale of…his load, boat and bedsteads…time[s] are very dull here and getting worse. There is very little money in circulation and nothing talked of but disunion. There is about 300 Minute Men in the city and they have committees appointed to find out if there is any Republicans about and if there is they attend to them and give them warning to leave. This is a very nice city and is improving very fast, but since the election of Lincoln business of all kinds has suspended until they see whether the South will secede or submit…". The original transmittal cover addressed to Miss. Eliza A. Cookes, Sisterville, Tyler Co., Virginia is included. Near fine.
