War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Private William Henry Brown, Co. F, 1st Georgia Cavalry, 2pp. octavo, pencil, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, December 28, 1862, and reads in part: “...There was some fighting at La Vergne day before yesterday evening and yesterday all day. Our troops have fallen back two or three miles. The generals say they must retake their former positions at all hazards. The enemy are advancing in strong force, said to be 70,000. They are making all preparations here for a general engagement....Johnson’s and Wood’s Brigades have come in this morning from Eagleville. Our troops are all alone from the Nolinsville Pike to the Nashville Pike in a straight line. Our remaining troops there have also fallen back. The battleground on the Nashville Pike will be near Stewart’s Creek, 18 miles from this place. I have just got back to Dr. Lytte’s...He say there were only three or four men killed in the Brigade during yesterday’s fighting...The enemy have crossed Stewart’s Creek. A brigade will oppose them down there. Our main force are in line of battle, three miles the other side of town...Cheatham sent word to Dr. Lytte to move as his house will be in the range of fire. There has been very little cannonading today. It is now too late in the day for a fight...I rode four or five miles this morning with Generals Bragg and Polk...” About very good condition.
