War-date Confederate soldiers letter by Robert M. Rucker, 2nd Tennessee Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Camp Currin Bates, 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, Potomac Line, Virginia, January 29, 1862, and reads in part: "...5 months have elapsed since I left home for this place which was the seat of the war, the line of the Potomac - The policy and aim of the enemy to break in upon us at either points they consider to be the weakest - it seems there is a great battle to be fought somewhere on Green River near Bowling Green, KY We have heard of a battle being fought at Somerset, Crittenden & Zollicoffer in which we suffered a considerable defeat - lost a lot of men - Tennesseans - some of them I know - also two batteries of Artillery, equipage and horses were deceived as to the Federal strength - 15 regiments of the enemy against the 5 of ours. Zollicoffer led the advance and was deceived by Indiana Regm, hollering for Jeff Davis which he took to be apart of our forces and commenced to command them when he was killed..." More.
