MOSBY, John Singleton (1833-1916) nicknamed the "Gray Ghost", was a Confederate Army cavalry battalion commander in the American Civil War. His command, the 43rd Battalion, 1st Virginia Cavalry, known as Mosby's Rangers or Mosby's Raiders, was a partisan ranger unit noted for its lightning quick raids and its ability to elude Union Army pursuers and disappear, blending in with local farmers and townsmen. The area of northern central Virginia in which Mosby operated with impunity was known during the war and ever since as Mosby's Confederacy. After the war, Mosby worked as an attorney and supported his former enemy's commander, President Ulysses S. Grant, serving as the U.S. consul to Hong Kong and in the U.S. Department of Justice. Scarce war-date Confederate partially-printed Document Signed “Jno. S. Mosby” 1pp. oblong octavo, “Headquarters Mosby’s Battalion, Partizan Rangers,” Nov. 2nd 1863, reading “This is to Certify, That Albert G. Ryan is an enrolled member of this Command.” with bold signature of John S. Mosby as “Major Commanding Partizan Rangers.” beneath. Government tape fold reinforcements, else an excellent example of this scarce Confederate imprint signed by a leading Confederate personality. Company “B” of Mosby’s Rangers was organized in October 1863 at Scuffleburg, Fauquier County Virginia. It was into this company that Albert G. Ryan was enrolled and would fight with this celebrated partisan unit. In 1996, Christie’s sold a similiar certificate for $11,500 (Sale 8452, Byron Reed Coll of Important American Coins and Manuscripts).
