War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by “John F. Croom” Sergeant, Co. A, 18th North Carolina Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia, 1pp. quarto, Ward 44, Prison Camp, Elmira, New York, November 12, 1864, and reads in part: “...Thank you, thank you! For your kindness to me in this unfortunate period of my life. The package sent has been received and for which you will please accept my thanks. They being my best and only currency....I fear that you trouble yourself too much about me. It is impossible for me to comply with the request of your friend just now, but will send her a camp made ring, if she will send me her initials or such other letters as she would like to have engraved on it....” Fine condition. John F. Croom enlisted into the service on June 11, 1861. He was wounded at Gaines’ Mill on June 27, 1862, being shot in the back. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House and sent to Belle Plains and transferred to Elmira on May 30, 1864. On March 14, 1865, he was transferred to Point Lookout for exchange. He saw action at Hanover Court House, Seven Days Battle, Gaines’ Mill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Falling Waters, Bristoe & Mine Run campaigns, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House.
