By Frank Shcaller, Colonel 22d Regiment Mississippi Infantry, Confederate Army.” Evans and Cogswell. Columbia, S.C. 1864, 278pp. 12mo., with ink dedication on fly leaf “Lieut. Gen’l Pemberton from the Translator. Columbia, S.C. June 1864.” Period binding. Fine condition. John Clifford Pemberton (1814-1881) was a career United States Army officer who fought in the Seminole Wars and with distinction during the Mexican–American War. He also served as a Confederate general during the American Civil War, noted for his defeat and surrender in the critical Siege of Vicksburg in the summer of 1863.
