Autograph Letter Signed, Henry V.D. Vannest, 4p. octavo on “THE WAR FOR THE UNION” patriotic stationary, June 29, 1862, with cover, in part: “...I am still at Havlock Station on picket yet we have to keep a good look out for the Rebels is ocming with 4 hundred men to burn a bridge witch we are guarding but I think they will have to work to do it. The other day came a lot of Rebels to a plantaion and the darkeys. One of them come where we was to let us know that they was a coming to give us a throw so we got our guns...but they did not come any further. They went to work and stole most everything the darkeys had in the world. I think if we could have been an hours sooner, we would have overtaken them, the Secesh wanted to know what kinds of guns we had and the darkies told them we had Springfield muskets...” More. Fine....plus; ALS by Vannest, 2p. octavo, on patriotic stationary, Beaufort, North Carolina, August 6, 1862, with cover addressed to his brother, it reads in part: “...I don’t feel well enough to write much this time, write as soon as you can. Please direct your Letter to Comp. F 9th Regt N.J.I. Beaufort, North Carolina, General Burnside Expedition...” Fine.. Vannest who enlisted as a corporal was reduced to ranks one week after this letter was written. The 9th New Jersey was active in the North Carolina campaign and later with the Army of the Potomac.
