A good group of three (3) checks signed by three individuals who played a role in the October 19, 1864 St. Albans, Vermont bank raid of Confederates under the command Lieutenant Bennett H. Young. Young and his raiders planned to burn the town after robbing her banks. The first check is signed by that town's First National Bank cashier Albert Sowles who, while at work at the counter, was accosted by two raiders who held their guns to his head and demanded the bank's money after telling him that he was their prisoner. He convinced the raider that the bags of gold they saw were filled only with coins and they left the gold behind. His signature appears on the verso of a partly-printed green/gold check, "Merchants National Bank, Burlington," [Vermont] for $1,000.00 dated Nov. 21, 1877. The second check is signed by St. Albans Bank teller Cyrus N. Bishop who was surprised by the raiders while he counted that bank's money. While their guns were aimed at his head, he watched as they gathered up the money he just counted. After that they administered an Oath of Allegiance to the Confederacy to him in the back room. His signature appears on the verso of a partly-printed "First National Bank" check for $106.70 dated 1870. The third check is signed by the Vermont militia general John L. Barstow (1832-1913) major in the 8th Vermont during the war, Vermont militia brigadier general during the time of the raid, Vermont congressman and governor from 1882-1885. His signature appears on the front of a partly-printed green pension payment from the "Merchants National Bank" for $18.00 dated 1872 issued to former Private Philip Ward 2nd Vermont who was wounded and captured during the battle of Savage Station, Va., June 29, 1862. Overall VG to near fine
