I am a member of the 18th NC Regt. Co. F and from Richmond Company. I have been a prisoner nearly 12 months. I am very much wearied with a prison life, but chuned up with the hope getting home soon as this cruel war is about over....Mr. Powell you have done so much for the boys in my county. I almost hate to appeal to you to favor me but as good deeds are never lost I wish you to favor me with a little money which will add to my comforts by so doing you will confer a great favor which will ever be remembered...” Fine condition. James Smith enlisted into the service on November 17, 1861. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House and sent to Elmira on August 3, 1864. He was released on June 14, 1865.
