A great partly-printed Confederate soldier's parole, 1. oblong 8vo., Lexington, N. C., May 15, 1865, issued to Pvt. David Lumsden Seceloff, Co. D, 42nd North Carolina Infantry, boldly entitled: "PRISONER'S PAROLE." reading, in part: "I, D. L. Siceloff a Private of Company (D) 42nd N. C. Infantry of the so-called Confederate States Army, captured at Lexington, N. C. solemnly swear before the Almighty God, the Sovereign Judge, that I will not bear arms against the United States Government…". Signed and made official by Capt, Andrew J. Fuller, 9th Michigan Cavalry as provost marshal and counter signed by Siceloff himself. A period (accomplished in fountain pen) ancestral note at the bottom of the document reads, in full: "This is not a prisoner's parole but a discharge from the Army at the end of the Civil War." Siceloff was a nineteen year-old teenager who came from Davidson County, North Carolina and was mustered into Co. D, 42nd North Carolina as a private at Petersburg, Va. on Oct. 1, 1863. He served in Hoke's Division as part of the Army of Northern Virginia and later Army of Tennessee when he was paroled at Lexington, North Carolina after apparently turning himself there to Federal authorities. Also included is a postwar CDV of Siceloff as an older man with photographer's credit of H. A. Lineback, Salem, N. C. on the verso and a mounted partial obituary for "D. Simon Siceloff." Expected wear effecting parole from being carried to prove his "discharge" from Rebel service. CDV some soiling, else overall VG.
