Autograph Letter Signed, Henry Vannest, 9th New Jersey Cav., 4p. octavo, Newbern, North Carolina, March 18, 1862, with later cover, it reads in part: “...in the first place the loss of horses is about fifty the loss on the enmy side is between eight and nine hundred the loss on our side is not quiet as great. We have taken about 80 cannon and I cant tell you really exatly yet, we had a hard time they had breast works about five miles long so you might know how it went, we have some brave men, we put our flag on the fort, our line of battle was about five miles long our brave Colonel Heachman stood his ground well, he had his belt and scabbard shot off of him in the battle field our boys all stood well...” Signed with complete regimental information. Fine.
