A rare war-date patriotic cover and letter written by 44 year-old Sgt. Thomas H. Mason, Co. I, 56th New York Vols. (Tenth Legion). The letter 2pp. 8vo., "Camp Vanwick," Oct. 24, 1861 concerns his being examined for mustering in and of their trip to the front. The cover was published for use by the regiment and bears a portrait of their commander Col. Charles H. Van Wyck (1824-1895) who obtained the rank of full brigadier general by the end of the war. Published by I. M. Martin, Newburgh, N. Y., and franked by Col. Van Wyck in the upper right hand margin with Washington D. C. cancellation. Both VG
