War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Private Samuel McDaniel & Gardiner T. McDaniel, both of Co. I., 3rd Maine Vols., Arlington, Va., July 12, 1861 to their sister Jane, in part: "…we have moved again 3 miles into V. A. and are to form a Brigade of 4 regiments. We are in 8 miles of the secesiners camps…we shall have some fiten to do in a few days…our picket guard took 6 negroes that run away from their masters nit before…and brought them in…there are [de]seaters in the 5 [Maine] regiment and our picket guard took a man last night that said…he run away from the secession army…". Gardiner's letter appears in the verso and contains some personal and camp news. VG.
