War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on United States Capitol stationery, by Private Gardiner T. McDaniel, Co. I., 3rd Maine Vols., "Camp Moriel" Fairfax Co., [Va.], August 4, 1861, in part: "…that fellow that died here belonged in Boston. His name was Blaisdel…there is a good many of this regiment sick in the hospital…we are going to have a battle the 18 of this month. It will be the greatest battle that we have had. It will be fought in the state of Virginia about three miles from where we had the other battle. It will be fought with 300 thousand of men of the Northern troops. They are a making 60 cannon a week in Washington and have been for three weeks to fortify with. Old Jeff Davis has been here with a flag of truce. He wants Lincoln to not fit anymore for three months, but he cannot be…deterred…".
